What do you care most about when you’re looking for a new job?

You don’t have to compromise and settle for only one of the below factors in your job search, but I find that it’s important to be very clear about your most important priority when structuring your job search, so you can meet your most important needs, first.

Remote

If you’ve been working in an office, a contact center, retail, a warehouse — you might be dreaming of a job that lets you work from home. If this is your number one priority, you can make choices in your job search that allow you to hyper focus landing a remote job, like focusing on remote-first companies, roles that are a lateral move, or companies you aren’t as passionate about.

With a remote job, you’ll be free from customers and managers in your face, long commutes and performative office culture. Plus, you’ll now have remote on your resume, proving that you can succeed in a remote environment.

If remote is your number one priority, look at any remote job you can get as a launchpad for the remote job you really want.

Company

If you’ve worked in a toxic workplace, you may be hoping to find a place that will treat you and your coworkers well, that will be doing something you find interesting and want to be a part of.

While it can be difficult to spot toxic workplace red flags from outside, companies do leave clues in their job descriptions, career pages, content and appearances by their executive leadership. Instead of going to job boards, focus your search on company pages directly and be prepared to wait for the right roles to appear.

Customers

Sometimes the types of customers you serve can make or break a job. Think about different industries you know and you are interested in. Even within B2B, it can be useful to know: do you want to work with executives, developers, sales teams, HR teams? Can you care about your customers’ problems?

Do your research and target companies’ job posts directly, rather than aggregate job boards.

Money

Money is important. Don’t feel like your priority can’t be making a lot more money because it absolutely can. Customer Success is a great field for wanting to be paid what you’re worth.

When money is your priority, then your job search needs to be structured around demonstrating your worth and negotiating with confidence.

Once you decide what’s most important to you, let that inform your job search.
