How to become a Customer Success Manager without being one first

Many Customer Success Teams are made up of Process Experts -- people that have been a CSM before -- and Customer Experts -- people that have experience as the customer or in the industry. Both types work together to make a balanced team.

Your best bet of becoming a CSM without already being one is as a Customer Expert.

What can you be a Customer Expert about?

What is your industry experience?

Make a list of all the industries you have worked in, and be specific.

  • Have you worked in restaurants? What kind of restaurants? As a host, waiter, kitchen?

  • Have you worked in Sales? As a salesperson or supporting salespeople? What industries did you sell to?

  • Have you worked in software? What kind of software? Was it B2B, B2C?

If you’re struggling here, think of every industry you know a little bit more about than the average person (and that you can demonstrate on a resume).

What kind of tech companies overlap with that industry?

There is software for everything these days. Start with what you used in your job. At a restaurant, what POS system did you use, what ordering system? Now, what are their competitors? What comes up when you search “restaurant SaaS” or “B2B restaurants.”

Do this with every industry you have any familiarity with, and suddenly you’ll have a list of companies that may be looking for your unique experience.

This approach to finding a job makes it easier to tailor your resume, because you can emphasize your specific industry experience and use that for different companies in the same industry. Same goes for your cover letter and answering those “why do you want to work here” questions. Less stress, more success.
