Common Interview Questions in Customer Success

Tell me about yourself.

You want to tie in your most recent and relevant experience, and you want to communicate your overarching values or a thematic throughline in your career. What are you looking for? Why this company?

This one is trickier than you think. If you can only prepare one question, let it be this one.

“Learning from failure questions” like:

  • Tell me about a customer you lost.

  • Tell me about a time you made a mistake.

  • What’s some feedback you’ve received recently?

The interviewer is looking for humility -- did you understand the problem, do you take accountability -- and proactive solutions -- what did you do to make sure you learned from your mistake?

Philosophy questions like:

  • What does Customer Success mean to you?

  • How do you prioritize?

  • What kind of responsibilities are you looking for?

The interviewer is trying to assess how you think about CS, and if that aligns with the company's philosophy. These are the kinds of questions where you want to be clear with yourself and in the interview -- if you don't answer them authentically, you could end up in the wrong work environment.

Can you do the job questions, like:

  • Tell me about a time you found an inefficient process and improved it?

  • A customer tells you they're churning with a few months left on their contract, what do you do?

  • How would you win over a difficult customer?

  • Tell me about a time you successfully grew a customer with limited resources? 

The interviewer is looking for specific examples with clear action that you took. Vague stories won't work.

You should write out your answers to these questions ahead of time.

Even better, write, refine and practice your answers so they feel confident and natural.
