CSM MARKET
Customer Success Manager jobs are up 82% in 2026
This year, growth across Customer Success Manager (CSM) roles has been strong and consistent, a good sign that the job market is recovering for CSMs.
CSM roles beat 2025 every single month this year. I found 1,747 CSM roles from January to September 2026, compared to 958 in the same months of 2025, up 82%. It's a better time to be looking for a role as a CSM.

BY LEVEL
CSM levels and salaries, from SMB & Digital to Strategic
CSMs as a category are far from a monolith. Depending on your years of experience and domain expertise, you likely fit into a particular level within the CSM category.
I started segmenting the Job Drop (my twice-weekly list of remote Customer Success jobs) by level so you could more easily find the right roles and so that I could better track volume and salary changes over time.

1 to 3 years · You've managed a large book or worked in a Digital, Scaled, or Pooled model, and you can get results at scale.
3 to 5 years · You can show SaaS familiarity, relationship-driven sales, and owning accounts from onboarding to renewal, from CS, Sales, or Onboarding & Implementation.
5+ years · You have one or two CSM roles under your belt and real expertise in the motion of Customer Success. Enterprise experience is a big differentiator.
7+ years · You've managed a company's most important customers and executive relationships, with industry knowledge and a track record of high performance.
A note on the level data. I started separating CSMs into levels on July 14, so the level-by-level numbers below cover about 11 weeks, July 14 to September 29. The year-over-year numbers above cover January to September 2026. Qualitative insights are based on a sample of 165 CSM job descriptions pulled in September 2026. Percentages are rounded and meant to show patterns, not exact counts.
What's the market like for SMB & Digital CSMs?
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
1 to 3 years
in customer-facing SaaS roles
SALARY RANGE
$79K to $100K
Median $90,000
The median SMB & Digital CSM salary is $90,000, with a salary range of $79K to $100K.
This category is where I put roles that explicitly call out high volume, low-touch CSMs, either managing a large book of customers or operating in a Digital (also called Scaled or Pooled) model.
These roles are perfect for 1 to 3 years in Customer Success or Sales folks, where you can prove you can manage high volume and get results at scale.
SMB & Digital isn't a step down but a branch with its own skill set. Mid-Career is the more traditional relationship role, and SMB & Digital is about volume.
SMB & Digital roles picked up in September, with 37 roles vs 29 in August, though July averaged more roles in fewer Drops.

Things you need to know if you're targeting SMB & Digital CSM roles
You don't need direct Customer Success experience. Most of these roles ask for 2 to 3 years in "Customer Success, Account Management, or a similar customer-facing role," and only one required CS experience specifically. If you're coming from customer service, or have a long history in hospitality, this level is a real option. You don't just have to look at Associate and Break Into Success roles.
This role is about managing and prioritizing a large volume of customers. Most of these roles, whether they're labeled Digital or just ask you to work with SMB customers, are about managing more accounts than you can have close relationships with. When a posting gives a number, it's big: 500 to 600 customers at Abnormal AI, "hundreds of agencies" at Motorola Solutions, and "a book measured in hundreds of accounts, not dozens" at Workyard.
You need to know your way around Salesforce or other SaaS CRMs. SMB & Digital postings name a specific tool or CRM more than any other level: about 2 in 3, compared with 1 in 3 for Senior. Salesforce is mentioned most, but these roles also name HubSpot, Intercom, Customer.io, Totango and Zoho.
What's the market like for Mid-Career CSMs?
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
3 to 5 years
in customer-facing SaaS roles
SALARY RANGE
$90K to $115K
Median $101,250
The median Mid-Career CSM salary is $101,250, with a salary range of $90K to $115K.
This category is where I put roles that ask for 3 to 5 years in SaaS, often as a CSM, but not always. Originally titled Mid-Market, I found that narrowed the scope too much, because these roles can cover a variety of customers and require a range of expertise.
These roles are perfect for 3 to 5 years in Customer Success, Sales, Onboarding & Implementation, where you can demonstrate SaaS familiarity, relationship-driven sales, and owning accounts from onboarding to renewal.
Mid-Career roles held steady, with 82 roles in August and 81 in September, though July averaged more roles in fewer Drops.

Things you need to know if you're targeting Mid-Career CSM roles
This is a generalist role. You'll own the account from onboarding to renewal. Thrive Global wants a "primary partner from launch through renewal," and Amplo wants you to "own a book of agency accounts end to end."
They want someone who understands SaaS and the motion of Customer Success. You don't have to have been a CSM to get these roles. If you're already a CSM, or you want to make a lateral move from an onboarding or account executive role, these are the roles you have the experience for. What they don't want is to teach you the basics of CS and SaaS, or the nuances of subscription customers. Only 2 of 55 postings required CS experience specifically.
Industry experience can make the difference. About 2 in 5 Mid-Career postings ask for experience in their industry, and about half of those make it a requirement, from legal tech at Thomson Reuters to hospital revenue cycle management at HaloMD.
What's the market like for Senior CSMs?
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
5+ years
in SaaS, usually as a CSM
SALARY RANGE
$115K to $150K
Median $132,500
The median Senior CSM salary is $132,500, with a salary range of $115K to $150K.
This category is where I put roles that are really looking for someone who has been a CSM before, even when the language is open. They don't always ask for 5 years as a CSM. Usually it's 5 years in SaaS, 5 years in a segment like Enterprise, or experience in an industry or with SaaS companies serving that industry. Then they add requirements that make it clear they want someone with a high degree of familiarity with the CSM role, often across more than one company. Taken at face value, a lot of these postings look like Mid-Career roles. I sort them by their requirements, not their title, so you can see who they're actually going to hire.
These roles are perfect for 5+ years in Customer Success, someone with one or two CSM roles under the belt. Additionally, experience with Enterprise SaaS can be useful, as these roles are often focused on smaller books and higher value customers.
Senior roles were the steadiest level, with 75 to 77 roles every month, including 76 in just the last two and a half weeks of July.

Things you need to know if you're targeting Senior CSM roles
This level is for experienced CSMs, even when the posting doesn't say so. Most say "Customer Success, Account Management, or a similar customer-facing role," and they don't always ask for 5 years as a CSM. But the rest of the requirements make it clear they want someone who has been a CSM before, or maybe an account manager or renewals manager. A CSM with 3 years and the right results and stories can compete at this level, depending on the company.
You need a track record of business outcomes. About 7 in 10 Senior postings talk about business results: success plans, ROI, and value realization. At this level there's a minimum standard for how you talk about your work, and it means quantitative, specific results. Nango wants someone who has "owned renewals and expansion, with results you can point to."
Enterprise experience is a big differentiator. About 4 in 10 Senior postings ask for enterprise customer experience in the requirements, meaning high-touch, deep, complex relationships. That's about 1 in 7 at Mid-Career. Cordial wants "7+ years in an enterprise client-facing role at a SaaS company."
What's the market like for Strategic CSMs?
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
7+ years
in SaaS, usually as a CSM
SALARY RANGE
$148K to $185K
Median $170,000
The median Strategic CSM salary is $170,000, with a salary range of $148K to $185K.
This category is where I put roles that are looking for 7+ years of experience, usually as a CSM. They don't always say 7 years as a CSM. They might ask for 7+ years in SaaS, in Enterprise, or in their industry, and then add requirements that only someone who has managed a company's most important customers could meet. These roles have high expectations and high salary ranges to match. This is also where AI-forward companies are hiring.
These roles are perfect for very experienced CSMs, generally with specific industry knowledge and experience and a track record of high performance.
Strategic roles are the smallest level, with 36 roles in August and 40 in September, about 4 to 5 in every Drop.

Things you need to know if you're targeting Strategic CSM roles
Industry expertise matters most at this level. About half of Strategic postings ask for industry or domain knowledge in their requirements, more than any other level. It's often deep and technical: SentinelOne wants "deep technical expertise in enterprise cybersecurity platforms," and Redox wants "direct experience engaging hospital or health system IT."
You'll be talking to the C-suite. Nearly every Strategic posting mentions executive relationships, and about 6 in 10 name the C-suite or specific titles like CIO, CISO or CFO. Concert Health wants someone who is "credible in a room with C-suite and senior clinical leadership."
AI-forward companies are hiring at the top of the market. Strategic roles are the top of the market, both in pay and in the expertise they expect you to bring, so it makes sense that this is where AI-forward companies show up. About 6 in 10 Strategic employers describe themselves as AI-native or AI-powered, compared with about 1 in 5 at Mid-Career. That includes companies like ServiceNow, SentinelOne, Figma and Deepgram. At some of them, AI fluency is part of the job: Deepgram says "AI use and comfort aren't optional."
