Welcome to 2025!

The job market of 2024 was beastly. It’s too early to say if we have fully left that behind us, but early indicators are pointing strongly at another employer-controlled labor market. What does that mean for you?

Unrealistic, low quality, and downright deceptive job postings

This was a trend of the last year that we can’t expect to go away. Without regulation, our only power against bad job posts is to ignore them. Instead of applying to every job you come across, come up with a few “green flags” to help you focus on the high quality ones, like:

  • a salary range

  • posted within a week

  • information about the team or hiring manager

  • information about the company and culture

  • specifics about the day to day

  • realistic expectations

And if you don’t want to think too hard about this, you’re in the right place. I have some pretty specific rules for jobs that make it into this newsletter and try to weed out as many deceptive postings as possible!

Low wage growth

Companies will always hire for the best value: what’s the most they can get for the least amount of money? After loads of layoffs, re-orgs and reinvestment, there are experienced job seekers willing to work for less than they deserve, and that means they can get away with offering less. (This isn’t a judgement on anyone in this position, but on the companies who purposefully created this environment!)

I look at thousands of job posts each month, and it’s not necessarily that salaries have gone down, but that salaries haven’t changed in 2-3 years. And they won’t change without major, labor-friendly market forces.

There are still jobs that hire at appropriate wages, and those are the jobs I share in this newsletter. I have a minimum expectation of salary for specific role types and years of experience, and you will never see a job on here with a wild mismatch.

Community, not competition

One thing about an employer labor market is that it is clarifying. Job seekers have the power to turn it on it’s head if we work together. Don’t apply to jobs that don’t meet your basic standards and encourage others to do the same. Depending on your state or country, you can also report bad job postings to a regulating authority, and encourage others to do the same. Let’s work together to share what works on resumes, in interviews, and help everyone play the game better, if not change the rules entirely.

Don’t fall for the idea that other job seekers are the enemy — if we’re fighting amongst ourselves then we miss who is actually responsible for the way things are.

Change is inevitable

If there is one thing you can count on is that things won’t be this way forever. It doesn’t take much or long for it to swing to a pro-labor market. Do what you can and what you need to survive things as they are, and know that they will get better.

If you’re really struggling with this job market right now, I want to help. I’m committed to sharing the best remote jobs in Customer Success I can find, and helping you get the best job for you.

I invite you to hit reply to email and tell me what you need most as you look for a job in 2025.
