I talk to a lot of Customer Success Managers - Senior, Experienced, New, and Aspiring. And you might not believe me, but there is one question that comes up over and over: have I been doing Customer Success the “right” way?

Many CSMs feel like they’re working with stitched together processes, shifting priorities, and they succeed by the skin of their teeth. They think the other CSMs at other companies must have it all figured out, that only they are feeling the chaos.

I can confidently tell you that every CSM feels the chaos to some extent. But the most successful CSMs learn to navigate it instead of wishing it away. And that starts with a strong foundational book I recommend to any CSM.

This book is a companion to books written for execs and leaders like Customer Success and The Customer Success Economy, but written for the Customer Success Manager. It lays out the foundation of skills, tasks, and knowledge that define the role in its ideal form.

A couple of things to keep in mind. It's written primarily by executive leaders, so it reads as the a leadership perspective; treat it as guidelines for how to communicate about your job, not gospel for how to do it. It was also published in January 2020, so it's missing some of the nuance of how the role has shifted in the last 5 years.

But you can't really appreciate what's new and nuanced about Customer Success without knowing the foundational texts. Read it to understand what leaders expect from the role, and you'll walk away with a clearer sense of where you're strong and where you have room to grow.

No single book is going to make your career. It takes an arsenal, and this is a great place to start building yours. If you learn even one thing from it, it was worth the read.
