The 4 Step Job Search Process

I’ve been thinking a lot about the process of finding a job, and how I think we’ve been getting backwards. We’ve been thinking “I want to get a job, so I need to work on my resume.”

In my mind, your resume is Step 3 — we’re missing all the important work that comes before it. Maybe this is why the resumes aren’t breaking through.

If you wanted a new job in the next few months, here’s how I would coach you:

Find your zone of genius.

Your zone of genius is not about what you’re good at or what you’re capable of, but what you can demonstrate that you are good at and capable of. 

What industries do you have experience in? What special knowledge do you have? What is your skillset? What stage of company do you thrive in? What would you bring to a company culture?

Determine your target companies.

When you know your zone of genius, you can create a criteria for companies that fit you -- not the other way around. This lets you filter for things like location, team size, company stage, industry, salary, etc.

Polish your application.

We do all this work before we touch the resume, the cover letter, Linkedin, or your network.

The market is crowded, companies are overwhelmed with applicants -- it's not enough just to stand out, every bit of your presence needs to say "I am the perfect person you have been looking for."You can only do that if you know who you're trying to attract.

If your job search is saying "I'm anyone, willing to work anywhere," unfortunately that is not messaging that clicks with recruiters right now.

It's why the job seeker sending 100 applications a week isn't getting anywhere at the same time someone is getting poached from a high-paying role to an even higher-paying one.

Build your network.

If there's one thing I can't stand is aggressive, cold pitch, all-about-me networking. It's here where we focus on authentic, mutually beneficial, meaningful connections.

You want to find hiring managers, recruiters, and people doing the job you want to be doing at your target companies. The more you do this, the more you curate your feed with opportunities you might have missed. You’re putting yourself in the arena.
